Big Bass on the Big D.

My good buddy Mike has been telling me about his secret fishing spot along the banks of the Delaware River for awhile now. After getting tired of seeing pictures of him holding 25-35lb Bass I finally took him up on his offer this morning. It didn't take 5 minutes before I was into my first fish, pictured above. The action stayed red hot until the tide dropped and we landed about 8 nice big spawned out Stripers. The water was the color of chocolate milk and we fished using bloodworms as bait. April has been very good to me so far.

A keeper from the surf

Nick and I fished Island Beach last night and caught this nice fat 28" bass and a bunch of skates. We were using hi-lo rigs with fresh clams.

Big Steaming pile of Carp

I was out fishing today for Shad when my downrigger got fouled up. I was trying to untangle the mess and the boat next to me shouts "hey buddy I think you got a fish on." I look at the starboard side rod and it's pinned, looks like it's hung up on bottom, then it starts getting pumped. I had a 15 pound Carp on 4lb. test. After a good 10 minutes or so the fish became tailwrapped and laid over on it's side about 100 yards down river, I couldn't budge it without snapping the line. Another fisherman pulled up and netted it for me. One broken rod later..........here it is.

Shad Run near it's Peak

Today was the day I'd been waiting for, well sort of. I woke up to pouring rain and temperatures in the mid 40's but got word that my buddy cleaned up on them last night. All of my friends pussed out because of the rain, but in 2 hours I boated somewhere in the neighborhood of 15-20 fish, including many big Roes. Days like this only come along once in great while and I got rewarded for braving the weather. We fish them using Rapala Shad Rap SR-5's and 7's with the treble hooks cut off. We trail flutter spoons about 3 feet behind the shad raps with flurocarbon leader and put the spoons right in their zone.

rest in peace Harry

The voice of the Phillies, and of Philadelphia has gone silent. Our beloved Harry Kalas, longtime radio and television voice of the Philadelphia Phillies passed away in the broadcast booth before yesterday's game against the Washington Nationals. Summers at the beach will never be the same again without the smooth sound of Harry's voice on my radio. It might sound funny but I think I speak for the entire area when I say that we loved this man from afar. He was such a huge part of our lives and in no way can be replaced. Along with Vin Scully he was the last of the old school, a class act who never felt the need to pollute a broadcast with useless info, he just called the game like no one else can. I am heartbroken by his passing but I take pleasure in knowing that he got to make the call in last year's World Series when Brad Lidge closed out the Rays giving the Phillies the 2008 World Series title.
